PetroWiki:Acknowledgements
Contributors to PetroWiki are asked to make several acknowledgements before their content edits can be saved. These acknowledgements serve as a reminder of the obligations of the contributor to ensure that material they contribute does not infringe on anyone’s copyright or intellectual property. They also serve as a transfer of copyright for the contributed material to SPE.
While it may be easy to just click the three boxes as a prelude to saving a page, it is important to make certain that you have given due consideration to each issue. SPE records your acknowledgements in case questions arise later.
Company permissions
Many companies have some concern around the possibility that employees could share information that the company considers to be intellectual property or to provide a competitive advantage. The level of concern and how it is addressed internally varies widely by company. It is the responsibility of each contributor to understand his/her company's policies and procedures related to external communications such as contributing to PetroWiki.
Permission for non-original material
When you make contributions to the wiki, you can freely transfer copyright of materials you developed for that purpose. If, however, your contribution includes materials that originated elsewhere (an SPE paper, a company brochure or report, something from a website), you do not own the copyright. Therefore, you must have permission to include this material in your submission, as well as clearly reference the original source and copyright owner.
Transfer of copyright
SPE policy requires that SPE hold copyright to all copyrightable material in its publications, including this wiki, and to the individual contributions contained therein, to protect the interests of SPE, authors and their employers, and at the same time, to facilitate the appropriate re-use of this material by others. Authors and their employers retain the rights to all intellectual property, including any idea, process, procedure, or article of manufacture described in the contributed material. SPE copyright applies only to the words on the page (computer screen), and since all contributions are subject to edit by others, any contributions may be changed at any time.
