Help:Managing files
If you have permission to do so, you can upload certain types of files to the wiki. This is particularly useful for uploading images, which you want to place on an article, but you can also upload other types of files.
Upload a file
- Prepare the file for upload (see section below). Make sure the file is exactly as you want it.
- In the left navigation, under Toolbox, click "Upload file"
- Click “Browse” to locate the file on your computer (the name of the “browse” button depends on your web browser).
- Fill in the “file description”, if necessary.
- Click the “Upload” button.
If it is a large file, you may need to wait several seconds for the upload to complete.
Preparing a file for upload
Use one of the many tools available to resize the image to an appropriate size for viewing the contents in a browser window. If the file size is large, you may want to reduce the resolution to make the file smaller (less time to upload).
Be sure you know the source of the file and ensure that you have permission to include it without violating copyright laws.
Using images and file description pages
After you've uploaded a file, you can use it in an article, with some special wiki syntax to create the link. See Help:Images.
Your file gets its very own “file description page”. You should edit this page to provide more information about the file. You should enter the source of the file and what its copyright status is, on the description page. If you have obtained permission for use of the file in PetroWiki, enter information such as who granted permission and on what date. Any other useful descriptive notes should also be added there.
