A calculation of the amount of hydrocarbon reserves that are in the formation. Proven reserves have a very high degree of recovery with wells in place and techniques that are proven.
Or
Reserves are those quantities of hydrocarbons which are anticipated to be commercially recovered from known accumulations from a given date forward. (SPE)
