Glossary:Methane measurement
The process of taking a reading of a methane emission. Measurement can be of any variable (volume, concentration, mass, frequency and so on) that allows for detection or for an estimate of emission rate.[1]
Methane measurement is the process of taking a reading of the methane concentration or methane emissions rate within an air sample at a specific point in time. Typically, measurement units are parts per million, parts per billion and kilograms per hour. Understanding global and local background methane concentrations is necessary to contextualize the data. Emissions measurements may be performed as one-time activities (snapshots), at regular intervals or on a continuous basis, but whatever the frequency, obtaining representative measurement is important.[2]
