A colorless, odorless gas that occurs abundantly in nature and as a product of certain human activities. Methane is the simplest member of the paraffin series of hydrocarbons and is among the most potent of the greenhouse gases. Methane is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CH₄. It is a group-14 hydride, the simplest alkane, and the main constituent of natural gas. The relative abundance of methane on Earth makes it an economically attractive fuel, although capturing and storing it poses technical challenges due to its gaseous state under normal conditions for temperature and pressure.
Colorado was the first state in the nation to enact leak detection and repair (LDAR) regulations in 2014 to reduce methane emissions. In December 2019, those rules were made more rigorous by the Air Quality Control Commission and are the toughest air regulations in the country.[1]
