A naturally occurring, solid, insoluble, organic material that occurs in source rocks and can yield Oil, Gas, Helium and Hydrogen oil upon heating under pressure. Kerogen is also defined as the fraction of large chemical aggregates in sedimentary organic matter that is insoluble in solvents (in contrast, the fraction that is soluble in organic solvents is called bitumen).
