Glossary:Hydrogen
A high density energy source and clean fuel which produces only water when consumed in a fuel cell and does not produce carbon dioxide when directly combusted. Energy resources like natural gas, nuclear power, biomass, and renewable power like solar and wind can all be used to produce hydrogen through processes such as steam methane reformation, electrolysis, and pyrolysis.
Hydrogen may play an increasing role as an energy carrier in the sustainable energy supply systems of the future, which may include the use of Hydrogen/Natural Gas Blends and synthetic gas as a feedstock for petro-chemical production as well as direct usage for electricity generation and as a fuel in its own right for systems that are difficult to electrify, such as heavy transportations, long-haul trains and marine applications. Ammonia and other carrier compounds of hydrogen are an integral component of such energy supply systems.
