Gate valve

Gate valve is defined in API SPEC 6A as a valve assembly with a closure mechanism operating within the body, 90° to the conduit, to affect a closure.[1] Gate valves are commonly used in the wellhead section of the well either as a side outlet valve in the spools or in the Christmas tree.

Gate valves have two modes, either fully open or fully closed. This distinguish the gate valve from the chole valve. The gate valve will allow the fluid to follow or it will completely stop it. On the other hand, a choke valve will restrict the flow.

Gate valves have several components including but not limited to:

  • Gate
  • Seat
  • Stem
  • Stem Packing (Seal)
  • Bearings
  • Grease fitting
  • Studs and nuts
  • Hand wheel
