Produced water is water or brine that often accompanies oil and gas that is extracted from underground reservoirs. The quantity of produced water increases as reservoirs mature, especially if secondary or tertiary recovery methods are used, and it often exceeds the volume of hydrocarbons in a reservoir. Produced water forms the oil and gas industry’s largest waste stream based on volume.<ref name="r1">Arthur, J.D., Langhus, B.G., Patel, C.
