References on PetroWiki are important to validate writing and inform the reader. Any editor can potentially remove unsupported material, and unsubstantiated articles may end up getting deleted; so when something is added to an article, it's highly advisable to also cite a reference to say where the information came from. It can also be a good idea to update or improve existing references. Referencing may look daunting, but it's easy enough to do. Here's a guide to getting started.


Adding a reference

A reference section must be added in your "Edit source" tab in wiki code. Please see the "Adding a reference" section at the end of this page to learn how to add this coding to your page.

Decide where you want your reference

Use your cursor to determine where you want your reference number to appear within the text.

Select the Cite button

Select the "Cite" button and choose the "Basic" option.

Add the reference in the pop up

Add in your reference. If you are unsure how to cite a work, you can refer to the SPE Style Guide.

Add a link

If you would like to link your reference to it's source you can select the "link" option.

This will create another pop up to add your link. Use the "External site" option if the work is not found on PetroWiki (OnePetro, JPT, etc.). Simply paste the link into the field from the webpage you are linking to.

After pasting your link into the link field, you will add your link to your reference by selecting the blue "Insert" button on the top right of the pop-up window.

Your reference will be previewed with a temporary reference number at the end that will also link directly to the website link you added. You can now click the blue "Insert button to finalize your reference.

You will now see your inline reference number displayed where your cursor was. The number assigned will be assigned according to where it is placed in the document.

Save your page

Select the blue "Save page" button at the top right hand corner.

At the end of your article, you can add a reference section. This will track all the references you add and keep them in the order they appear.

Please save any work you have done before starting this.

Scroll to the very bottom of your page and type in the following:
